Opportunities for Robotics Students in Texas Tech Hubs

Why Texas, and Why Now?

As we’ve pointed out many times here on Texas Innovation; the Texas technical hubs and start-ups are rapidly expanding, and so is industrial automation, which is opening up more opportunities for robotics students and professionals. This guide walks through the major hubs, the kinds of companies hiring interns in each, what those internships typically look like, and how to position yourself to land one. Internships are the most important way to gain hands-on experience, build relationships and advance your career. Many full time positions come directly from internships.

Texas Universities have taken tech programs to the next level

Texas universities have responded to demand by building out formal robotics degree programs, not just robotics labs. The University of Texas at Austin,

For example; runs a collaborative program called Texas Robotics that unites robotics efforts across campus, comprising 16 core faculty members, 40 affiliated faculty members, and roughly 200 students, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scholars, and research engineers drawn from four top-ranked engineering and computer science departments. In fall 2025, UT Austin introduced what is believed to be the first undergraduate robotics program in the country that lets high school students apply directly to it as part of their freshman admissions application, and the inaugural class drew about 3,500 applications for roughly 50 spots. The talent pool is small and competitive in robotics. A $5 million gift from venture capitalist Bill Gurley is helping fund research opportunities, experiential learning, and lab upgrades for the new program. Notably, program organizers have said explicitly that the point of the hands-on, experiential curriculum is to strengthen students' access to internships and better position them for future employment or graduate school— opportunities that, historically, weren't available outside of master's programs.

That kind of institutional investment matters for internship- and robotics students because it means Texas schools are increasingly built to funnel undergraduates into real industry work quickly, and well prepared.

Austin: The Center of Gravity

Austin is Texas's clearest robotics hub, driven by a mix of humanoid robotics startups, autonomous systems companies, and defense-tech firms that have relocated or expanded there in the past few years. Here are some growing companies to watch for in Austin. Keep an eye out for internship or career opportunities from them.

Apptronik, the Austin-based humanoid robotics company, and its subsidiary Elevate Robotics — formed to focus on mobile manipulation for warehouse and industrial work — are among the most visible employers of robotics interns in the city, with roles spanning robotics software, real-time controls, and simulation.

Saronic Technologies, which builds autonomous surface vessels for defense and maritime applications, regularly hires interns for roles that touch navigation, communication, and control software for autonomous systems, along with embedded and low-level programming.

Atomic Semi, a small semiconductor fabrication startup, has offered automation software internships aimed at students who can show off a portfolio of hands-on projects involving motor controllers, path planning, and trajectory control — the posting is notably candid that it wants students with a GitHub full of things they've actually built, not just coursework.

Beyond individual companies, Austin's advantage is density: UT Austin sits at the center of the ecosystem, and the university's Texas Robotics group actively markets an Industry Affiliate Program

so companies can build direct pipelines to student talent. The program offers partners access to cutting-edge research through custom partnerships with faculty and labs, project consultation, conference updates, and attendance at the Texas Robotics Symposiuum, with membership tiers ranging from a $10,000 small-business tier up to a $230,000 tier that funds three graduate researchers. That structure means many robotics companies in Austin already have a formal, ongoing relationship with the university's student body — which is exactly the kind of channel that turns into internship offers.

Defense-funded research is another Austin-specific opportunity. Since 2019, Army Futures Command's collaboration with Texas Robotics has produced a novel model for rapidly adapting and integrating robotics and AI systems research, centered on the Robotics Center of Excellence, which opened in 2020 and encompasses all major robotics research disciplines at UT. More than 150 undergraduate and graduate students have worked on Army-funded research projects through this partnership, giving students direct exposure to applied autonomy work combined with public service — a path into internships and jobs at defense-robotics firms in the area.

Houston: Space, Energy, and Industrial Robotics

Houston's robotics internship market leans heavily on the city's space and energy industries.

For students more interested in industrial and process automation than aerospace, Houston's energy sector offers internships built around robotic process automation, PLCs, HMIs, and system performance work in refining, chemicals, and materials processing.

Dallas-Fort Worth and West Texas: Aerospace, Defense, and Manufacturing

The Dallas-Fort Worth area and pockets of West Texas contribute a different flavor of robotics internship, rooted in aerospace manufacturing and defense contracting. Fort Worth-area sites tied to Lockheed Martin's manufacturing operations have run large-scale, multi-phase engineering internships — one recent posting described a Cleburne-area role structured as a part-time internship during the spring academic semester followed by a full-time, ten-week internship over the summer, open to students pursuing degrees in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or related technical fields.

Farther west, satellite and space-hardware manufacturers in Midland have posted robotics-adjacent internships focused on mechanisms and electromechanical testing for satellite assembly, a niche but genuine option for students near the Permian Basin region who don't want to relocate to Austin or Houston.

Richardson and the broader Dallas area, meanwhile, host semiconductor and electronics manufacturers such as Texas Instruments, whose internships frequently touch the embedded systems, sensors, and control work that underlies robotics, even when the job title doesn't say "robotics" directly.

San Antonio: Applied Research

San Antonio's contribution to the state's robotics internship landscape centers on Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), one of the largest independent, nonprofit applied research and development organizations in the country. SwRI regularly hires interns for roles that support electrical design, controls, and hardware integration on industrial robots, cobots, and automation control systems, as well as software-focused roles building tools for robotics and controls research.

Because SWRI operates as a contract research organization across defense, automotive, energy, and space sectors, its internships tend to expose students to a wider variety of problems than a single-product company would, which makes it a strong option for students who aren't yet sure which slice of robotics they want to specialize in.

What These Internships Actually Look Like

Across hubs, a few patterns show up repeatedly in the postings themselves. Most robotics internships in Texas run on the standard tech hiring calendar, with summer roles (roughly May through August) posted in the fall and winter, and smaller cohorts of fall and spring interns as well. Pay varies widely by role and seniority: broad market data puts the median for entry-level robotics internships in Texas at around $15 to $16 an hour for lower-experience roles, while more advanced or specialized robotics internship postings report a median around $85,000 annualized — a gap that mostly reflects the difference between hourly technician-style internships and full-stack software/controls internships at well-funded startups.

On the skills side, postings converge on a fairly consistent list: proficiency in Python or C++, familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System) or simulation tools like Gazebo, CAD experience, and some exposure to micro-controllers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Coursework in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and programming, combined with simulation tools, is what companies consistently list as the baseline for robotics engineering interns. Hardware-focused startups in particular tend to weigh personal projects heavily — Keep in mind, in the end most companies want to see what you've built, how you work, and not just what courses you've taken.

How to Position Yourself

A few practical steps make a real difference for robotics students trying to break into these hubs:

Build a visible project portfolio. Because so many Texas robotics startups explicitly ask for a GitHub or portfolio link, having even one or two well-documented robotics projects — a ROS-based navigation stack, a custom PCB for motor control, a computer-vision pipeline — will do more for your application than another line on a resume.

Get involved with a university robotics program early. Programs like Texas Robotics at UT Austin are explicitly designed to funnel students toward internships through research streams, industry symposiums, and direct company partnerships. Even if you're not at UT, look for your own school's equivalent: robotics clubs, competition teams (FRC/VEX alumni, robo-soccer, autonomous vehicle competitions), and freshman research initiatives are the on-ramps that companies actually recruit from.

Target the hub that matches your interests, not just the biggest name. Austin is the best fit for students drawn to humanoid robotics, autonomy, and defense-adjacent AI. Houston suits students interested in space hardware, aerospace integration, or industrial process automation. Dallas-Fort Worth and West Texas are strongest for aerospace manufacturing and defense contracting. San Antonio, through SWRI, is the best option for students who want breadth across industries before specializing.

Apply early and to multiple company sizes. Large, established employers (Amazon, Texas Instruments, aerospace primes) post internships far in advance and run structured, multi-phase programs, while startups often post on a rolling basis and can move quickly once they find a strong candidate. Applying to both types in parallel — a startup for hands-on ownership, a larger company for structure and mentorship — is a reasonable strategy for most students.

Don't overlook defense- and government-funded research as an internship substitute or supplement. Programs like UT's Army-funded Robotics Center of Excellence give undergraduates real applied research experience that reads, on a resume, very similarly to an industry internship — and can be easier to access for students earlier in their degree.

Looking Ahead

Texas's robotics internship market is still expanding. New undergraduate robotics degree programs are graduating their first cohorts, well-funded startups in Austin continue to scale their engineering teams, and the state's existing aerospace, energy, and defense infrastructure gives robotics companies a reason to set up shop rather than compete purely in Silicon Valley's labor market. For robotics students willing to be flexible about location within the state, Texas now offers a genuinely broad set of internship paths — from humanoid robots and autonomous ships in Austin, to satellite mechanisms in Houston, to industrial automation in San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth — making it one of the more compelling places in the country to build hands-on experience before graduation.
